Design That Thinks Ahead: Why I Believe Smart Spatial Planning Is the Ultimate Luxury

Designer Thoughts: There’s a certain kind of quiet thrill that comes from opening a drawer and discovering that( miraculously) it fits exactly what it needs to. No rummaging. No jostling. No swearing under your breath at an oddly-sized salad spinner. Just seamless, intelligent design.
That moment? That’s not an accident. That’s spatial planning.

We think of spatial planning as the unsung hero of truly elevated living. While everyone else is marvelling over the velvet banquette or the antique Moroccan rug, it’s the invisible decisions - the ones made months before paint hits walls - that make a home actually work. The difference between "well-designed" and "deeply liveable" often comes down to this: space that has been thought through, not just styled up.
Here's my opinion on what that really means...
Form Follows Function - but only if function has a map
A home isn’t a set of rooms. It’s a system. An ecosystem, even. The kitchen speaks to the dining area, which feeds into the way your guests circulate, which connects to how your children (or dogs, or guests’ dogs) move through the space.
Smart planning accounts for not only what a space is, but what it wants to do. For example:
That sightline from the front door straight through to the garden? Intentional.
The powder room subtly tucked just out of view (and hearing...), but easily accessible from public spaces? Not a coincidence.
The fact that there’s a drawer exactly where your daily essentials land the minute you get home? That’s forethought disguised as convenience.
I always say and really believe that "true luxury is a space that doesn't make you work for it"
Every Square Metre Should Be on Payroll
Let me explain ... in my view, there is no such thing (or at least there shouldn't be) as a “wasted” corner or a “spare” room. Every area of your home should be doing something - quietly, effortlessly, and preferably with a touch of elegance of course.
A forgotten nook becomes a reading retreat. The awkward space under the stairs transforms into bespoke storage or a built-in wine library (your priorities, your call). The point is: spatial planning ensures no square metre is underperforming.
Think of it like editing a novel. Every paragraph (read: space) must earn its place.
Storage Isn’t Boring. Poor Storage Is.
There’s a reason I ask soooo many questions at the beginning of a project: Do you cook often? Do your kids play in the living room? What’s the first thing you do when you walk in the door? What do you need immediately accessible on a daily basis? (e.g. dog leash, keys, tote bags, gym gear). Should this space feel more casual or elevated (or a bit of both)? Do you need to store board games, tech, toys, magazines, chargers, etc.? Do you have a collection you’d like displayed eg. cookbooks, wine, ceramics? What kind of toys, crafts, books or school items do they have? Do you want them to access their own storage, or is adult-level control preferred? These details don’t just help us “organise things.” They allow us to plan for how your life actually moves. Storage should feel intuitive; tailored not only to your needs but to your habits.
In a well-planned home, you don’t have to think about where things go. They just go. Now that’s luxury...
Building a home is a big investment - emotionally, financially, and creatively. The smartest clients aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets, but the ones who ask the right questions early.
We’re here to guide you from concept to completion with clarity, creativity, and care (and just the right amount of well-placed cautionary wisdom).

Think Ten Years Ahead (Not Just Ten Pinterest Boards)
We design for the version of you who hasn’t arrived yet: the one with a few more hobbies, an evolving family, or just a newfound obsession with dinner parties. That means flexible spaces, thoughtfully placed electricals, and layouts that can accommodate life’s natural evolution. I have a growing family, so I'm always looking ahead and one of the reasons I absolutely love working with other growing families!
I believe luxury is never short-sighted. It anticipates. Thinking about is one of my favourite parts of the design process.
The Best Spaces Anticipate the Pause
One of the most underestimated aspects of planning is where to do… nothing. The moment between. I love a good moment! The still point in a busy day. The landing space at the end of a hallway. The perfectly placed window seat that encourages a midday break.
These aren’t extras. They’re essentials. A well-planned home knows when to breathe. The ultimate luxury.

Obviously this is not only my career and business, it is my passion, and I truly believe that design that thinks, is a gift that keeps giving. Let me explain ... Spatial planning is not just about what fits where. It’s about how a home feels when you live in it. It’s about the small efficiencies that add up to big ease. It’s about a sense of grace, and not in the aesthetic sense alone, but in the everyday, lived-in experience of space that understands you.
In a world obsessed with visuals, we champion homes that think as beautifully as they look. The kinds of spaces that move with you, not against you. That hold your life, your rituals, your quirks, your shoes - and in most importantly make room for the future.
Because the ultimate luxury isn’t what your home says; It’s how your home works.
