The Entryway Sets the Tone - Here’s How to Get It Right

Designer Thoughts: First Impressions Start Here. At Natalie Boyd Design House, we believe your home’s entrance should feel effortless, elegant, and unmistakably you.
They say you never get a second chance at a first impression, and your foyer/entry is no exception. It’s not just a space you pass through; it’s the handshake of your home, the first whisper of what lies beyond (I do realise how corny that sounds). But I do believe the entry needs to begin with a statement, perhaps a sculptural console, a gorgeous oversized plant, flowers or (my absolute favourite) oversized natural stems in a curated vase for visual drama, an unexpected piece of art, or a pendant light so striking it could moonlight as jewellery. Then, consider your lighting. A layered mix of ambient and accent lighting creates a warm, flattering glow that feels more like refined hospitality than a doctor’s waiting room.

Here are our top tips for designing a foyer that feels both luxurious and inviting:
Anchor the space with a statement piece; a sculptural console, artwork, or bespoke lighting.
Layer your lighting; a mix of ambient and accent lighting creates a warm, welcoming glow.
Keep it functional; elegant storage like hidden drawers or built-in joinery keep things beautiful and practical.
Think materials; consider natural stone, brushed metal, or tactile wallpapers that evoke quiet luxury.
Mirror the mood; a large mirror not only opens up the space but also reflects light and intention.
Of course, beauty should never come at the cost of practicality. Discreet storage, like built-in joinery or cleverly hidden drawers ensures your entry stays as polished as your welcome. If you prefer guests to take their shoes off, make it clear with a designated spot, it avoids the awkward shuffle and you having to ask them. Personally, I find it a bit odd (unless it’s muddy shoes or feral children). I know, controversial! But sweaty socks and bare feet roaming your floors? They’re not jumping into your bed - just walking through your house. And there’s something hilariously undignified about adults in lovely outfits padding around barefoot like they’re at a sleepover. I digress, excuse the tangent... Materials matter too. Natural stone, brushed metals, fluted timber or tactile wallpapers introduce that quiet luxury we love, softly spoken, never showy. And finally, add a mirror. Not just for last-minute lipstick checks, but to reflect light, intention, and that effortless sense of spaciousness. When thoughtfully designed, your entryway doesn’t just invite you in, it sets the tone, the mood, and the standard for everything that follows.
