Embracing Smaller Homes and Thoughtful Design: An Interior Designer's Perspective

Designer Thoughts: Life is getting more and more expensive, small blocks of land are becoming increasingly common thanks to urbanisation and limited available space in desirable locations, and we are becoming disconnected to one another in our homes. But with clever and creative design, we can make the most out of our spaces and create elevated, efficient living spaces and more affordable homes without the need for huge houses.

By focusing on clever design principles like maximising space, natural light, and eco-friendly materials, homeowners can enjoy a more functional and cost effective home while still being beautiful and stylish. Plus, smaller homes usually require fewer resources for heating, cooling, and upkeep, saving homeowners money in the long run.

Intelligent design can tackle the challenges of high property prices and costly construction by unlocking the potential of small blocks of land and creating homes that are practical, beautiful, comfortable, and sustainable.

Well Designed Multifunctional Rooms

In the fast-paced world of interior design, trends come and go like the changing seasons. But amidst the constant flux of styles and preferences, there's a timeless appeal to the beauty of smaller homes with multi-functional spaces. As an interior designer, I have seen firsthand the magic that can be created in compact living quarters when creativity and functionality come together.

One of the most delightful aspects of working with smaller homes is the challenge of maximising every square inch of space. It's like solving a puzzle where every piece has its place, and when it all comes together, the result is a harmonious blend of style and practicality. Multi-functional spaces are the key to making a small home feel spacious and efficient, allowing for seamless transitions between different activities throughout the day. I always try to make use of the vertical space as much as possible and that most of the furniture has a dual purpose!

Here are few ideas:

  • OFFICE/GUEST ROOM - Your home office with a daybed that can be used as a couch/sitting area and as a bed when guests are sleeping over

  • OFFICE/FITNESS - Prioritise your office to have a yoga area with some exercise accessories

  • DINING/LIBRARY - Transform your dining room/area into a cozy haven by incorporating bookshelves onto the walls. Include a reading nook complete with a lovely occasional chair in the corner

  • LOFT BED/OFFICE & LOUNGE - With that extra room under the loft, you have the perfect space to design your very own at-home-office, a cozy living area, or a gorgeous hobby nook

A larger Living Area With Several Zones

On the flip side, designing a home with a larger living area that features different sitting zones can offer a sense of luxury and privacy within the same space. Imagine having your own cozy nook for reading or a quiet corner for reflection, all within the same room. With the clever use of dividers or strategically placed furniture, these sitting zones can provide a sense of retreat without the need for separate rooms.

In today's digital age, it's easy for our children to retreat to their bedrooms and get lost in the world of devices. As an interior designer and a parent myself, I believe in designing homes that encourage family togetherness and interaction. Instead of creating separate media rooms or spaces for isolation, why not design a home that is inviting for the whole family to gather in the living room or kitchen? Picture your kids doing their homework at the kitchen island while you prepare dinner, creating a sense of connection and shared experiences that are priceless.

Prioritising The Alfresco As Another Living Room

When it comes to outdoor living, the alfresco should never be treated as an afterthought. Instead, it should be seen as a whole other living area, an extension of the indoor space where nature and comfort blend seamlessly. By integrating the outdoor and indoor areas through thoughtful design elements, such as sliding doors, cozy seating, and ambient lighting, you can create a seamless flow that invites you to step outside and unwind in style.

To sum it up, the true beauty of interior design lies in its ability to create spaces that not only look good but also feel good. By embracing the charm of smaller homes, thoughtful design elements, and a focus on family togetherness, we can transform houses into homes that are warm, welcoming, and full of life and togetherness.
